Student Senate approved a few changes Monday night to the proposed differential tuition ranges for the 2008-09 academic year.

The biggest changes were the increase to the faculty and student collaborative research and the decrease of the amount allocated to the Service-Learning program and first-year experience programs.

About 32 percent of the money currently goes to faculty-student collaborative research, according to the bill. Next year it's estimated to go up to 37 percent and in 2008-09, it should again be between 35 and 40 percent.

Secretary Aaron Olson questioned some parts of the proposed numbers.

"If more and more money is put (into collaborative research), the academics part will be lost because students will be doing projects just to do projects," Olson said.

He also added that faculty-student collaborative research does not have much oversight.

Others disagreed, including Senator David McCarthy, who said there is a series of checks and balances with collaborative research.

Senator Tim Lauer said student-faculty research does not necessarily have to have an infrastructure in place.

"(The point is) getting work published, that's what students strive for," he said.

Senate officials will send the proposed percentage ranges to Vice Chancellor Andy Soll, who will then report to the Academic Affairs Commission in fall 2007.
