Police arrested two freshmen residents of Putnam Hall Sunday night on drug-related charges, Director of University Police David Sprick said.
Michael Deremer, 18, of 320 Putnam Hall, was arrested for possession of drug paraphernalia and his roommate, Eric P. Williams, 19, was arrested for possession of marijuana at approximately 7:30 p.m.,
Sprick said.
Deremer and Williams were taken to Eau Claire County Jail after small amounts of marijuana, drug paraphernalia and magazines related to marijuana were found in their room. There was also $795 that smelled of marijuana in the room, Eau Claire Police Department Deputy Chief of Patrol Brad Venaas said.
"Because it had the smell of (marijuana) on it, the potential that they were selling was there," Venaas said.
Officers had been investigating a forgery case in Eau Claire, and Deremer was a suspect in the case, Venaas said.
Upon investigating Deremer, the officer doing the follow-up had reason to believe drugs were in the room, Venaas said, so University Police were called to do a search.
Deremer and Williams denied having marijuana in the room and gave consent to a search, Venaas said.
After the initial search, police requested a canine unit, and one dog was brought in to search, Venaas said.
Deremer and Williams were arrested and released Sunday evening, Sprick said.
He said people rarely sit in jail for those types of arrests.
Deremer and Williams could not be reached for comments.
