Rather than tackling on the field, former UW-Eau Claire assistant football coach Todd Glaser will be pacing the sidelines of Carson Park this fall as head coach, Director of Athletics Scott Kilgallon announced March 21.
Glaser, who played defensive line for the Blugolds from 1987-90 comes back to Eau Claire after three seasons as head coach at Marietta College in Ohio.
Glaser, the 15th coach in Blugold history, succeeds Todd Hoffner, who resigned Feb. 10 after seven years as head coach.
"I am very excited to be here," Glaser said. "It was always in the back of my mind that I wanted to come back, and I feel honored to be at a great university and in a great community."
According to a news release, Glaser guided Marietta to a 13-17 record in three seasons and was named the Ohio Athletic Conference Coach of the Year in 2004 after a 6-4 season.
"He is genuine, down to earth and knows his football," Kilgallon said. "We are very excited to have him in Eau Claire."
Glaser played for coach Jim Lind during his college career and was a student assistant after completing his eligibility. He was an assistant under coach Greg Polnasek from 1992-94 before leaving Eau Claire to take over the Neillsville High School program, where he went 6-12 in two seasons, according to the release.
He returned to Eau Claire in 1997 as a linebacker coach and strength and conditioning coordinator under coach Bob Neilson and became defensive coordinator under Hoffner in 2001.
During his final two years as defensive coordinator in 2001 and 2002, the Blugolds produced 8-2 season records, shared the WIAC championship in 2001 and had the second-ranked defense in yardage allowed.
Kilgallon said Eau Claire is an "attractive school and an attractive conference" and the department received a great response from a lot of highly qualified people from around the nation.
But it was Glaser who won the job during the interview process, Kilgallon said.
