Associate Professor of Accounting Lucretia Mattson has been elected secretary of the Wisconsin Accounting Examining Board, according to a UW-Eau Claire news release Friday.
She has served as a board member since the State Senate confirmed her appointment by Gov. Jim Doyle in March 2004, according to the release.
Her term will expire July 1, 2007. Mattson said her duties on the seven-member board will include investigating complaints, administering disciplinary action and determining certification requirements for CPAs.
She said she was selected partially because of her position as a professor.
"That was one of the reasons they wanted me on (the board), because I brought that educational viewpoint," Mattson said.
David Christianson, the president of the Wisconsin Institute of Certified Public Accountants, of which Mattson has been a member since 1984, said Mattson is definitely qualified.
"Lucretia has been involved in the profession really at every level," he said. "She has provided tremendous leadership in the WICPA, all the way to the level of president."
He added that her experience as an educator will make her a "tremendous asset."
Besides teaching, Mattson coordinates the Eau Claire program for volunteer accounting students in the Volunteer Income Tax Program, which provides free income tax assistance to people with low incomes, including students.
Senior Kristin Pearson, one of the co-chairwomen of the program at Eau Claire, said Mattson makes well-informed decisions.
"I think she brings in a lot of different points of view," she said. "She's really good at seeing problems from all different angles."
Mattson said she continues to do some accounting work on the side.
"I have a philosophy that says I should practice what I preach," she said. "It keeps my fingers in the real world."
Mattson said she is looking forward to her new office.
"If you are in a profession, you should help it improve and increase in its value," she said. "And that's one way I can help do that."
