UW-Eau Claire Provost and Vice Chancellor Emeritus Ron Satz died Tuesday, after a more-than-two-year battle with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Satz officially retired from the university in October 2005, following a relapse of the disease.
Satz, who served the university for 22 years, will be remembered for both his strong leadership and gentle nature, Eau Claire staff and students said.
"Dr. Satz was one of the first administrators that started to put students first. That has really caught on," Student Senate President Aaron Olson said. "He was a kind and gentle man."
Jane Larson, program assistant in development and alumni relations echoed Olson's sentiment.
"Generally, I would say that he was an extremely strong leader," Larson said. "He was especially committed to the university and our students."
Satz came to Eau Claire in 1983 as the dean of graduate studies and research. In 1994, he took on the role of dean of the school of human science and services and became the first dean of Eau Claire's college of professional studies in 1995. Satz served as the university's provost from 1999 until his leave of absence in April 2005.
Program Assistant Linda Baumeister, who worked with Satz for six years, said the long-time administrator not only was dedicated to the university, but also was a caring and devoted family man.
"He wasn't just all business," Baumeister said. "His family came first and he expected everyone else to do what they had to for their families."
Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs Steve Tallant filled in as interim provost while Satz was being treated, and has continued since Satz's leave of absence. Soon-to-be Eau Claire Chancellor Brian Levin-Stankevich will work with a committee to appoint a permanent provost.
