The vocal composition "Private First Class Jesse Givens," which will be performed for the first time during the 42nd Intercollegiate Men's Choruses National Seminar, March 16 to 18, at UW-Eau Claire.

The song was inspired by an Army soldier's last words to his family from Iraq.

The piece is based on a letter Army Pfc. Jesse Givens of Springfield, Mo., wrote to be delivered to his wife and their children in the event of his death. It was composed by Lee Hoiby.

Givens was killed in May 2005 when his tank fell into the Euphrates River as the ground beneath gave way.

The 2006 Seminar will be hosted by the Singing Statesmen and will have 15 male choruses representing 1,200 singers from eight states and the District of Columbia.

Givens' widow will attend a special performance of the piece by Eau Claire's Singing Statesmen and Miami University Men's Glee Club from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. March 18 in the Council Fire Room of Davies Center.
