Education marginalized by Republicans
Issue date: 2/13/06 Section: Letters
Once again we are witnessing the twisted priorities of our Republican-led Congress and President Bush. Last week, the president signed into law a bill which will cut $12.7 billion from student loans. Unfortunately, student loans represent 30 percent of the total cuts made to the federal budget.
If that doesn't seem outrageous enough, consider the fact that student loans only represent one-half of 1 percent of the total federal budget.
On the other hand, the Pentagon's budget will be increased by $21.6 billion to $461 billion for 2007. President Bush claims that he is cutting programs like education because they aren't working, but what he is really doing is making sure they don't work.
I challenge any student to defend President Bush's warped priorities and assert that we can compete in the new world economy with China and India under his plan for second-rate education.
