One month ago, the fate of Eastern Washington University's interim president was up in the air, but now the UW System president's choice finalist in UW-Eau Claire's chancellor search, Brian Levin-Stankevich, is one step away from knowing just that.

The Board of Regents is expected to announce its decision Friday on who will be replacing former Eau Claire chancellor Donald Mash, who resigned his position in February 2005 after accepting the position of senior executive vice president for the
UW System.

However, before System President Kevin Reilly made his recommendation to the Board of Regents, Levin-Stankevich was also seeking to fill the top executive position at another university.

According to the South Dakota Board of Regents, Levin-Stankevich was also one of five finalists in Black Hills State University, Spearfish, S.D., presidential search, which ended Jan. 25 when the board selected former UW-Whitewater Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Kay Schallenkamp.

During his Jan. 26 visit to Eau Claire, Levin-Stankevich, also the founder, assistant coach and general manager for Eastern's club hockey team, said he believes interacting with students on a personal level is what allows him to identify their needs.

"Leadership needs to represent the accomplishments of the institution," he said. "You must know your stories; you must know what your accomplishments are."

Levin-Stankevich said he believes that there is value in understanding student's stories and being able to go out and talk with them.

A native of Buffalo, N.Y., Levin-Stankevich said he and his wife, Debi, will be looking for a house near the Eau Claire campus in order to be close enough to interact with students.

Levin-Stankevich served as Eastern's provost and vice president for Academic Affairs before Eastern President Stephen Jordan took a position at Metropolitan State College at Denver, when Levin-Stankevich took over the position as interim president in June 2005.

During his 10 years at Eastern, Levin-Stankevich served in multiple roles, including vice provost for Student Affairs and Enrollment Management and vice president for Student Affairs.
