Students may differ in many things - backgrounds, majors and extra curricular activities to name a few - but one thing students seem to have in common is a desire to save money.
The Eau Claire Chamber of Commerce has compiled a welcome packet filled with coupons from businesses to help the newly arrived freshmen save money.
Pam Craker, current owner of My Friend's Place Spa and Salon, 2519 East Clairemont Ave., is one business owner who contributed to the packet.
She said the reason she decided to offer free haircuts was students generally don't have any money, and it was one way she could help them.
Craker has been keeping track of the number of students coming in and has already noticed an influx of both male and female students, she said.
"We have had 43 fliers come in already," she said.
She also is adding 15 percent off haircuts or hair products all year for students who show their student identification cards, she said.
There is no expiration date on the coupon, so students who just got a haircut at home can come to the salon at anytime, Craker said.
"We do tons of continued education, new haircut styles and hair product knowledge," she said.
The welcome packets were given to the students when they moved into the residence halls.
Freshman Kara Wallis said she couldn't recall if she's used any of the coupons since she arrived.
"I'll probably use them all eventually," she said.
Junior Charley Stran said he also recalled finding the packet when he arrived in Governor's Hall freshman year but wanted more coupons.
Stran said he remembers using the discounts for pizza from the packet his freshman year.
