When Yi-Ling Bao, associate professor of art and design, begins an illustration for the literary magazine North American Review, she said she doesn't hurry to the "art part" like other illustrators do.
"(Magazine editors) can tell I really read it," she said. "They want someone to understand literature ... to read deeply and then go."
O'Brien's exhibit features vases, tea and coffee services and dinnerware.
Bao's exhibit features pencil illustrations she has drawn for the North American Review while she has been a faculty member at Eau Claire.
"It's always neat to see the artists' work," said Tom Wagener, the gallery's director, at Bao's artist discussion, held at noon on Monday.
O'Brien's presentation was held on Wednesday. She could not be reached for
comment.
Senior Amanda Matzke stopped by the exhibit Monday to support the faculty members and to see Bao's presentation.
"It was very interesting," she said. "The fact she has that respect (for) the author and a strong attention to detail is really impressive."
The magazine recruited Bao when she was attending the University of Northern Iowa in 1992. She began illustrating for it once again about two years ago.
Bao said her objective is to relay a story's major theme through the illustrations she draws to accompany them.
"I try to read a story many times," she said.
She said she enjoys challenging stories, and her editors have told her in the past, "No illustrator can do it, but we know you can do it."
Bao said, "Writing is a piece of art," adding that writers put their heart into their work.
"I have to have equal heart in mine,"
she said.
The Faculty Art Show opened Sept. 8 and will end Sept. 29. Attendees can view the works from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and 1 to 4:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. The Foster Gallery is located on the first floor of the Haas Fine Arts building.
"It's just good to see what our professors are doing," Matzke said of why it's important to go view the exhibits. "(If you go) you might learn a thing or two."
