UW-Eau Claire's Teaching and Learning Technology Development Center and Computing and Networking Services have merged, forming the Learning Technology Services.

Craig Mey was the interim director for TLTDC and director for CNS during the transition. He is now director of LTS - an entity he said will better serve students' needs.

"We're finding out what the better opportunities are now," Mey said about the two units joining together to become one.

He said the idea to combine the two units had been brought up by members of TLTDC about a year ago.

He said many of the duties and goals of the units overlapped with each other, and both parties realized it would be better for everyone to become one unit.

The change became official Aug. 12.

Members of both units had been geared up for the merge during the summer and training periods.

Kenneth De Meuse, professor of marketing and managing, spent about twelve hours with members of LTS helping them manage the change, Mey said.

The first few weeks of the fall semester had always been busy for CNS, so the joining of CNS with TLTDC right before the new school year could have been hectic.

Alumnus Brandon Knuth, who has been working for what is now LTS for almost a year, said the help desk always has higher volumes of people calling in the fall, and they were prepared for the potentially higher number of calls this year.

"It already is smoothing out," he said.

Merging a few weeks ahead of the fall semester helped in dealing with problems, he said.

"We've resolved a lot of issues," Knuth said.

Mey commended the staff of LTS for managing and handling the change exceptionally well.

For the student, nothing has really changed. LTS wanted a transparent merge where things would change internally but the services offered to the campus and students wouldn't suffer, Mey said.

"We didn't want any negatives to come out," Mey said about the decision.

He sees the merger as an easier way for students to get the help they need for their computers.

A benefit for the students and professors comes in the form of the new help desk, located in what was the CNS office, Old Library 1144.
