Arguments against gay marriage go beyond the Bible
Issue date: 2/19/04 Section: Letters
As a Christian woman who is against gay marriage I want to explain some of my concerns. As Schneider pointed out, many Christians oppose gay marriage for the underlying reason of the Bible. Although I believe the Bible is the most significant document on earth, Joe Schneider inadvisably feels that we should not base our opinions on a book that is 2,000 years old.
Although I do not feel we should disregard this historical book, I will put the Bible aside and out of this issue for once. The reason I am doing this is to underline something that most people fail to notice: Both Christians and non-Christians who oppose gay marriage do so NOT only because it is condemned in the Bible, but because of a substantial concern for the cornerstone that founded humanity and holds together society; the family unit.
Families have been holding together communities around the world since the beginning of humanity. There has been immense research done recognizing and celebrating the considerable differences between the male and female that compliment marriages, especially when raising children.
At the same time, social science confirms that two parents of the same sex, however loving or nurturing they may be, fail to meet the unique needs of children in the same way that a mother and father can. If the government takes this step to rip apart the basic building block that has been holding our communities together for centuries, there will be a meltdown that will have immense repercussions.
So as Schneider said, "sometimes doing the right thing is more important that making everyone happy." Same-sex marriages deliberately deny every child involved a much needed mother AND father - all in the name of adult desire.
You see, I might be seen as "racist" or "homophobic" by some, but I have much more in mind than just a verse in the Bible; I am deeply concerned and worried about the aftermath this law would have on families, communities, children and most of all, our future.

Gays will have families whatever happens. Without a law, they're still having families. (Continued…)

All I have to say is that this argument is completely flawed. It is by your view Jesse, that a gay couple being married and raising children is such a travesty to our society. (Continued…)

I agree wholeheartedly with everyone who has replied to this article. Why is there something wrong with homosexuality? Because God says so? I know in this article the author tries to put religion aside but she also makes it very clear that that is one of the biggest reasons she is against gay marriage, so I will talk about it. What people like Jesse fail to realize is that every child is unique in his or her own sense, regardless of the sexuality of the parents (or parent), and there's no crime against being unique. (Continued…)

Anti-homosexuality is just hate. Justify it however you want: religion, politics, economics. It all boils down to hate.

This article was written five years ago. Someone needs to go tell the Christians we have a democrat in the White House and being gay cool again. Go cry about your sky-god myths somewhere else. (Continued…)
