The UW-Eau Claire volleyball team knew going into Wednesday's game against UW-River Falls that it was a big one.
The Blugolds got the upset win at McPhee, beating the fifth-ranked Falcons in four games, and netting the 700th career victory for coach Lisa Herb.
While it was a milestone night for Herb, she was more focused on how important the win was for the Blugolds (14-6 overall, 2-2 WIAC).
"This match was so important to the team conference-wise," Herb said. "This team knew it could win close matches. It was important for them to experience it."
After the Falcons (18-3, 4-1) won the first game 33-31, the Blugolds jumped out to a quick lead in game two, winning 30-21.
In the third game, the Blugolds fell behind 20-16 before running together five straight points to take the lead. The teams went back and forth before Eau Claire held on for the 30-28 win.
The Blugolds fell behind quickly again in the fourth game, trailing 14-9 before starting to come back. They tied the game for the first time at 25 on a service ace by sophomore Molly Menard. Eau Claire took the lead on the next point and held on to win the match.
"(The Blugolds) were a little sluggish in the fourth game," Herb said. "(The team was) able to get back in it little by little."
Senior Brooke Wozniak-Schmidt said the Blugolds have been struggling to finish matches, so it was especially nice to be able to finally do that against River Falls.
"We really cut down on our mental lapses," she said. "Hopefully, we can use this to keep going strong in the conference."
Herb becomes the fourth Div. III coach and 13th in college volleyball at any level, to reach the 700-win plateau, pushing her career record to 700-273.
