MUSIC REVIEW: Bizkit record impresses

Rap-rock band's newest album keeps guitar riffs heavy, lyrics tight

More surprising than the heavy sounds are the equally gentle tracks like "Behind Blue Eyes" and "Down Another Day," where Durst takes advantage of his throaty but in-tune vocals to belt out some impressive pseudo-balladic melodies.

Durst's cover of The Who's "Behind Blue Eyes" is the most fitting of ballads. With lyrics like "No one knows what it's like to be hated/to be faded" and "No one bites back as hard/on their anger" makes it obvious why Durst - probably the most loved and hated of all musicians - chose this particular song.

What stands out most on the new album is the lack of that generic rap-rock sound that so many Limp Bizkit clones are cursed with.

It's Durst's character that shines through and sets the band apart from its clones. Many of the band's lyrics set it apart from the typical generics.

"Results May Vary" has its downers. Toward the end of the album, the heaviness fades and Durst gets more serious, abandoning the distortion to favor more balladic mixes. It works with "Behind Blue Eyes," but the songs surrounding it will leave listeners craving more power chords and pushing the back button a few times to return to the first few tracks.

As usual, the first track is a stupid intro that adds nothing to the overall CD and could have very easily been abandoned.

The bonus DVD is simply a preview of Limp Bizkit's upcoming CD "Poop." It offers a few humorous moments involving former guitarist Wes Borland, but is ultimately a disappointment without any music videos or extras.

In a time when rock and rap have more or less converged on numerous borders, Limp Bizkit's newest album needed to rise above the band's numerous clones to re-state their dominance in the game. With "Results May Vary," they succeeded, but barely.
