A report released Jan. 22 by the National Surface Transportation Policy and Revenue Study Commissin urges a 40 cent increase to the 18.3 cent national gasoline tax over the next five years to fix aging infrastructure and ease traffic congestion. The tax would be increased five to eight cents annually, adjusting for inflation.

Report: Women getting more degrees

University used to large ratio; no changes imminent

A Jan. 10 report from the U.S. Census Bureau showed about 33 percent of women age 25 to 29 had a bachelor's degree or higher in 2007, compared with 26 percent of men. At UW-Eau Claire, there is roughly a 2-to-3 men to women ratio on campus, according to the university's Web site. Director of Admissions Kris Anderson said women have outnumbered men at Eau Claire for years now.

Freshman Provocation to discuss value of education

Faculty speakers to present effects of liberal arts on careers

To address student uncertainty about a liberal arts education and build value in UW-Eau Claire's approach, the College of Arts and Sciences is hosting the first Freshman Provocation at 7 p.m. tonight in Schofield Auditorium, said Michael Weil, associate dean of the college. All students are invited, but the event is targeted to freshmen.
