Tuition increase alarms Senate

Student Senate lent its support to higher education reinvestment while opposing a four-day break surrounding the Easter Holiday at its meeting Monday night. According to the higher education resolution, tuition has increased 70 percent over the last six years.

Students driving on Clairemont Avenue and Interstate-94 will have to live with the construction until sometime in the fall, according a Wisconsin Department of Transportation official said. Brent Pickard, communications manager at the DOT, said reconstruction of the interchange between Hastings Way and Clairemont Avenue should be completed some time in October.

Return to Wisconsin program gives breaks to relatives of UW-Eau Claire graduates living out of the state

The UW System Board of Regents is scheduled to examine the renewal of a program that gives discounted tuition to children and grandchildren of alumni living in other states. System President Kevin Reilly will recommend the extension of the Return to Wisconsin tuition program to the Board of Regents' Business, Finance and Audit Committee Friday at the Board's March meeting in Oshkosh.

Provost search over, Tallant fills position

The nationwide search for a new provost and vice chancellor for Academic Affairs ended this week with a familiar face filling the position. Chancellor Brian Levin-Stankevich announced Monday that he has chosen Steve Tallant to fill the university's No. 2 administrative position.

When Jeremy Gragert graduated from UW-Claire in 2005 with a degree in history, he wasn't sure what he wanted to do as a career. He said his history classes helped teach him what is important in life. Gragert decided to dedicate a year to serving others by joining Americorps VISTA in February 2006.

Plan gives service members leave before deployment

Eau Claire students in the military and their families look forward to new proposal

A new bill proposed by State Sen. Kathleen Vinehout, D-Alma, will allow family members of military servicemen and servicewomen to spend time with their loved ones before deployment. The Family Military Leave proposal, if approved, would allow service members, parents and spouses of service members to take "unpaid, job-protected leave" from work, according to a press release.
