Governor's proposal would increase System funding

Gov. Jim Doyle called for an increase in funding for Wisconsin's higher education system last week as he made his plea to the Wisconsin Legislature to accept his 2007-09 biennial budget proposal. "It is a plan that not only invests in the needs of all Wisconsinites, but reflects the greatest hopes and aspirations of our people," Doyle said in his budget address.

Before he first ran for public office in 2002, state Rep. Terry Moulton, R-Chippewa Falls laughed at the idea of becoming a politician. Now, Moulton is serving his second term in the state Assembly and is the only incumbent from the Chippewa Valley to keep his seat in the 2006 election.

When Geoff Peterson came to UW-Eau Claire in 2000, he said he was determined to help students understand political processes through student-faculty collaborative research that was never offered to him as a college student. Now, seven years after arriving in Eau Claire, Peterson's work has paid off after he was elected as a councilor in the social science division for the Council of Undergrad Research, a national organization that supports and promotes high-quality student-faculty collaborative research.

Reception marks opening of new Special Collections room

UWEC faculty, McIntyre Library staff hope to see more students utilize section

After months of construction, the Special Collections section of McIntyre Library now has a new home. At a Friday afternoon reception in the section's new, fifth-floor location, university officials unveiled the newly renovated and relocated facility. The Special Collections section was recently moved from its previous location in the Old Library.

Landlords award student scholarships

Money goes toward supporting randomly chosen student tenants

Three UW-Eau Claire students living in off-campus apartments got a bit of a surprise last semester when they each received a $250 scholarship from their landlords. Graduate student Aliesha Dehmer and seniors Grant Lissick and Randall Pingrey received scholarships from North Country Aire Properties, University Area Housing and Caron Management, respectively, according to a university press release.

Campus Calendar

Tuesday • 7 to 8 p.m. Planetarium Show. This month's feature is "Wonders of Deep Space," which ranges from the birth of stars to the "discovery" of galaxies. A host will point out constellations and discuss the current evening sky. Free. Planetarium, Phillips Hall.
