Taxpayer amendment stops at Senate

Many area legislators pleased with final vote

A joint resolution that would have created a statewide Taxpayer Protection Amendment failed in the state Senate Thursday by a vote of 11-21, an act area legislators consider a victory for the UW System. Rep. Rob Kreibich, R-Eau Claire, said he wasn't surprised by the Senate's vote, but said he was surprised by the lack of support by his fellow Republicans in the Assembly.

Student Senate will hold a special election Wednesday for students to re-evaluate UW-Eau Claire's membership to the United Council of UW Students. The referendum question asks students whether they wish to continue being a part of United Council. United Council is a state-wide lobbying organization designed to represent the interests of UW students at the legislative level.

In a galaxy far, far away, planets, stars and other astronomical bodies came down to planet Earth Saturday for Astronomy Day at Phillips Science hall. Director of the L.E. Phillips Planetarium and associate professor of physics and astronomy Lauren Likkel said this has been the third year UW-Eau Claire has hosted the event.

In a survey released this month by CollegeGrad.com, employers ranked the criteria they find most important in a college graduate. The survey found that a student's major, and how it applies to the field he or she may be hired into, is the most important factor an employer considers.
