Police, employers using Facebook

Student profiles may affect jobs

Since Facebook became available at UW-Eau Claire in the spring of 2005, students have been able to use the service to contact college and high school friends from all over the world to see how they are doing via their profiles. But now law enforcement officials and potential employers also are beginning to use Facebook, said officials at the Eau Claire police department.

For many UW-Eau Claire education majors, being a student teacher is their first experience in a classroom setting, but some are getting the experience before their final semester. Students in Curriculum and Instruction 437, Teaching Foreign Languages in Grades 1-9, will be given the chance to teach through a program that offers foreign language courses to first through fifth-graders in the Eau Claire area.

Student receives award for outstanding academic record

One economics student is getting help towards her education through a new scholarship established after the sudden death of a UW-Eau Claire alumnus. The first Mike Reinke Scholarship was awarded to junior Vanessa Klemish last fall, with the $2,400 award available for this semester's expenses, said Ed Young, chair of the economics department.
