University reacts to weekend crash

Senior aspired to teach music

By all accounts, senior Branden Atherton was immensely devoted to music and would have made an outstanding music teacher someday. Atherton was killed on his 24th birthday when one of four buses carrying members, chaperones, teachers and family members of the Chippewa Falls High School marching band crashed early Sunday morning into a semi that overturned on Interstate 94 north of Osseo.

One Eau Claire student remains hospitalized

The semi-truck driver involved in a Sunday-morning crash on Interstate 94 that killed five people and injured 39, drove with a suspended license, according to a press release from the Wisconsin State Highway Patrol. Michael John Kozlowski, 22, of Highland, Ind.

After hearing about house party busts in September and observing the buzz surrounding alcohol this semester, sophomore Amanda Rose said she was expecting a bit of a clash between police and students over homecoming weekend this year. But after celebrating with friends and enjoying the homecoming festivities, she said, it seemed like alcohol was a far less contentious issue than she had anticipated.

Eau Claire City Council member Toby Biegel faces charges of resisting a police officer and operating while intoxicated, third offense, after a traffic stop in Chippewa County Sunday afternoon. After two consecutive weeks of meetings more than three hours long, Student Senate completed their meeting in less than two hours Monday night in the Tamarack Room of Davies Center. For about an hour and 15 minutes of that time, senators debated how long they could debate.

Grant to give professors American history lesson

$1.5 million to develop, improve teaching techniques for better education in historical courses

A $1.5 million federal grant will help teachers and professors throughout the state enhance teaching history more creatively and effectively. The grant was funded by the U.S. Department of Education. A large majority of the grant will support the 70 teachers who will enroll in the "Making Americans, Making America" project.
