Two on exchange in New Orleans return after hurricane

Warm weather, the absence of snow, a diverse campus and Mardi Gras were all temptations that led sophomore Sydney Dun to spend a full year studying at the University of New Orleans. Through UW-Eau Claire's National Student Exchange program, she arrived in New Orleans in the middle of August with time to enjoy herself before classes started.

Officials brace for $90 million System cut

Facing $4.1 million in budget cuts for the 2005-2007 biennium, administrators at UW-Eau Claire are looking for ways to decrease expenses. The six-month state budget-passing process concluded in July, leaving the UW System with about $90 million in cuts, after factoring in the Board of Regents-approved 6.

UWEC ranks as fifth public university in the Midwest

UW-Eau Claire continues to find itself in the top tier among other public colleges across the Midwest, according to the 2006 rankings in the U.S. News and World Report magazine. The annual rankings, released online Aug. 19 and in print Aug. 22, found Eau Claire fifth among regional public universities and 26th amid private and public institutions.

The Blugold card has long been the official identification for students and is used for a variety of different services, such as meal plans, resources at the campus library and access to athletic events. Soon, students will have another option: a debit account.

Students traveling past Chancellors Hall will have to try to resist the temptation of driving in circles as they encounter the City of Eau Claire's first roundabout. Completed in the first week of August, the roundabout is near Sacred Heart Hospital, 900 W.

Carrie Dachel wasn't required to complete a volunteer project at UW-Superior. In fact, it wasn't until she was surfing on AmeriCorps' Web site right before she graduated that she realized what service opportunities were available. Now, the New Auburn native is a vista working in UW-Eau Claire's Service-Learning office, as well as recruiting volunteers to work at local area nonprofit agencies that need the most help.

Campus 'gears up'

Grant will allow low-income students better oppurtunities

Thanks to a $2.4 million federal grant awarded to UW-Eau Claire, more than 500 low-income students at four northern Wisconsin schools will get new resources and encouragement to help them pursue a post-secondary education. Most of the affected students are Native American or live in depressed areas and may not receive the opportunity to learn about furthering their education otherwise, said Marge Hebbring, director of the Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs, "We're preparing students so that they'll be eligible for college," she said.

Imagine the typical college student driving down the road in late summer with the windows rolled down and the stereo turned up as high as it will go. All of a sudden, orange signs appear out of nowhere and large orange barrels block the road, forcing traffic through a two-lane undivided stretch of highway.
