A new bill that would restrict Wisconsin cities from raising minimum wages could thwart the efforts of Eau Claire politicians and citizens to raise the city's minimum wage. On Tuesday, the state Assembly voted 58-37 in favor of a bill aimed at restricting Wisconsin cities from setting their own minimum wages.

UW-Eau Claire does not have salaries that are competitive with the rest of the nation and the divide is growing wider, Vice Chancellor Andy Soll said. A recent survey by the American Association of University Professors found that the average salaries of University of Wisconsin faculty at comprehensive campuses have fallen and continue to fall.

University Senate will continue its deliberations on Service-Learning at its final meeting of the year at 3 p.m. Tuesday in the Tamarack Room of Davies Center. In an April 26 meeting, Senate voted to amend guidelines proposed by the Service-Learning Ad-Hoc Committee, rejecting limitations on political activities that would ban partisan projects.

On the same day of a hearing for State Rep. Rob Kreibich's, R-Eau Claire, tuition cap proposal, three Democratic state representatives proposed increases in financial aid to help offset rising tuition costs. Madison representatives Spencer Black, Mark Pocan and Joe Parisi announced plans to increase appropriations for the Wisconsin Higher Education Grants program by about $17 million over the course of the biennium, according to a press release.
